Low-kick Grenade from FN

 

Anybody who has fired an old-fashioned Lee-Enfield .303 will recall only too well the moment of joy when the rifle butt bangs into the shoulder to leave an uncomfortable reminder of the range for some hours. Firing a rifle grenade has provided infantrymen with an even less pleasant "visiting card", and apprehension about this when they have to fire grenades equipped with bullet trap devices specially designed to fire ball ammunitions is considerable. So much so, that accuracy can be reduced, and selection of window and door firing positions in town combat conditions can be affected.

This problem has been ad- dressed by Fabrique Nationale Herstal with their grenade which will be exhibited publicly for the first time at the AUSA show and at the Defendory International Exhi- bition this autumn. It is a rifle gre- nade of totally new design which should definitively put an end to any reservations which users of such equipment may still harbour.Up to now this type of firing was generally hazardous because of the high mass and consequently high recoil energy of rifle grenades which are most uncom fortable and intimidates the firer.FN has met these two major problems with its new telescopic antipersonnel rifle grenade which is based on a totally original Concept the bullet thru. Unlike the bullet trap this new device does not try to stop the bullet. On the contrary, the bullet passes through the grenade warhead. Consequently the soldier can fire his grenade without any risk. whatever the mix in his magazine: 5.56 mm or 7.62 mm, ball, armour piercing or tracer rounds.As far as stocking and transport are concerned the telescopic fea- ture of the FN rifle grenade solves the problem of bulk posed by con- ventional rifle grenades. The basic length of the telescopic grenade is indeed only 20 cm (i.e. one third less than in the case of conventional grenades) while reaching 30 cm just before launching. This feature, togetherwith the low mass of the grenade (about 300 g) provides substantial logistic advantages either by in- creasing the number of grenades a soldier can carry or by diminish- ing his burden although carrying the same number of grenades. However its operational ad- vantages are even more convinc- ing. While providing a lethal radius of nearly 10 m, the FN tel- escopic grenade does not have the major drawback of conven- tional grenades, i. e. a recoil en- ergy of about 90J which is gener- ally considered as the maximum value acceptable for shoulder fir- ing. The recoil energy generated by the launching of the FN tel- escopic grenade is only about 45J with a 5.56 mm rifle and 60J with aThe telescopic antipersonnel rifle grenade from FN can be fired without risk to the user due to its innovative low-recoil design.

7.62 mm rifle. That means a se- cond apprehension less for the rifleman, who can fire from the shoulder in all combat positions without any fear of an excessive recoil energy. He can thus take advantage of the various covers and considerably increase his hit- ting probability especially in he case of door or window firing and when firing directly against enemy. e

The telescopic concepts also made it possible for FN considerably simplify the pye- technical chain, resulting in a lower weight and in lower produc- tion costs without altering the quality of the various safety de- vices. The new FN telescopic grenade is totally safe as far as transport and handling are con- cerned. Only the propulsion gas pressure can set the various ele- ments of the pyrotechnic chain in action.
